During the First World War (1914–18), more than 90,000 Gurkhas served in the Indian Army, suffering approximately 20,000 casualties, and receiving almost 2,000 gallantry awards. Gurkhas fought on the Western Front, Gallipoli, Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia and on the North West Frontier.

(Gurkha Brigade Association)

Around 100,000 Gurkhas fought in the First World War (1914-18). Gurkha battalions served at Neuve Chapelle, Loos, Givenchy and Ypres on the Western Front, and in Mesopotamia, Persia, Palestine and Gallipoli against the Turks.

(National Army Museum)

The Indian and Gurkha troops that were sent faced one of the worst European winters on record, with extremes of cold, rain, mud and disease, as well as the dangers of modern mechanised trench warfare and cultural and language difficulties.
