Walking down the urban park area of Ypres ramparts promenade after snow fall : line of trees around pond empty of fishermen
Browse the collection : Ypres cityscape
The ramparts are now beautiful places of mature trees and quiet water, wildlife, and the somehow suprisingly mellow constructions of prior military needs. The best of the ramparts are to the south and east of the city, and a walk along them will take an hour plus an almost limitless amount of explorations and musing time.
You can join the Vauban Ramparts at the Menin Gate Memorial and continue along the canal, enjoying peaceful surroundings and plenty of benches along the tree-lined path. The walk is generally calm compared to other places in Ypres and is a great place to escape the busy hot, streets in the height of summer.
Visiting Ypres is like taking a step back in time. The charm of romanticism, the glory of days gone by and a subtle air of mystery all add to its special atmosphere. The old streets surrounding the town centre bear the imprint of ages past.
