The Belgian army’s defense of the Yser Canal in October 1914 is referred to as the Battle of Yser. The land surrounding the River Yser, which formed a natural obstacle to the German advance, was woven through with a network of drainage canals, the area itself being made up of ‘polder’, or reclaimed land.
(War Race)
There are 643 First World War Belgian military casualties buried here, of whom 232 are identified. Burials and casualties discovered in the battlefield area after the war and the reclamation of the flooded land here were reburied in this cemetery.
After the war Belgian burials in the area were consolidated into this cemetery which now contains the graves of soldiers most of whom were killed during the battle of the Yser (IJzer) in october and november 1914.
