The flat coastal area, known locally as ‘Bachten de Kupe’ is woven through with a network of tiny drainage canals, for this is reclaimed land, or polder. The water level is just below the surface, and is regulated by the canals, and a widespread system of sluices and pumps.
Coastal zone agriculture forms a green space with various recreational assets, it is important in terms of water regulation and it offers a unique landscape with a typical biodiversity.
The Westhoek is situated around Diksmuide, Ypres, Poperinge and Veurne. Between these impressive, historic cities you will find many small, charming, traditional Flemish villages and especially beautiful agricultural landscapes.
