Outstanding architecture gem of Tournai : the Unesco listed cathedral ” Notre-Dame ” with its huge dimensions and its iconic five towers
Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium
The Cathedral of Notre-Dame in Tournai was built in the first half of the 12th century. It is especially distinguished by a Romanesque nave of extraordinary dimensions, a wealth of sculpture on its capitals and a transept topped by five towers, all precursors of the Gothic style. The choir, rebuilt in the 13th century, is in the pure Gothic style.
(Unesco)
Begun in the 12th century on even older foundations, the building combines the work of three design periods with striking effect, the heavy and severe character of the Romanesque nave contrasting remarkably with the Transitional work of the transept and the fully developed Gothic of the choir. The transept is the most distinctive part of the building, with its cluster of five bell towers and apsidal (semicircular) ends.
The city on the Scheldt is said to be the second oldest city in Belgium, after Tongeren. But opinions are quite divided about that. But what is certain is that the rich history of the city is clearly visible everywhere in the city.
