The Bridge of Holes (“Pont des Trous” in French) : iconic monument built in the 13th century on the Scheldt (Escaut in French) river
(Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium)
The “Pont des Trous” one of the most prestigious vestiges of medieval military architecture in Belgium. Built in the late 13th century, the bridge was part of the second surrounding wall of Tournai, which featured a total of 18 gates, and protected the course of the river Scheldt through the city.
The Belgian town of Tournai, with 70,000 inhabitants, a thirteenth-century bridge has begun demolishing to give way to ships of up to 2,000 tons. The Pont des Trous (Bridge of Holes), built between 1281 and 1329, has begun to fall in this border city with France that aspires to be part of a canal project between the Benelux and the French port of Le Havre.
The third symbol of Tournai is definitely Pont des Trous Bridge. Built in the late 13th Century, it was completely destroyed during the Second World War. Rebuilt after it today is a wonderful reminder on some past times and the significance of the river traffic in Tournai.
