Medieval towers of Tournai Grand-Place most iconic landmarks : the belfry and Our Lady’s cathedral both listed Unesco World Heritage
(Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium)
The Grand Place is one of the city’s relaxing area where you can enjoy (with moderation) one of our local specialities in the shadow of the Belfry, the Cloth Hall or the Saint Quentin’s Church. Not far from the church, you can find a way to a beautiful square and to the Red Fort, remains of the first city surrounding wall.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, between 1992 and 2002 it underwent restoration and development of tourist facilities. You can visit several of the interior rooms and climb the 257 steps to the upper terrace with its magnificent view of the town and information panels providing geographic orientation.
There are two World Heritage Sites here; a magnificent Romanesque-Gothic cathedral and a Belfry that has stood since the 12th century. Tournai, with close streets that beckon you down to quaysides on the River Scheldt, is a city that demands exploration.
