Main square of Tournai : old buildings and epic statue of Christine De Lalaing defender of the city in the 16th century
(Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium)
The Grand Place centres on a statue to Christine de Lalaing, a governess who lead the defence of the city against Parma in 1581. One major landmark lining the Grand Place is the angular St Quentin Church. This holy building cuts quite the castle-like figure with its turrets, as it squeezes in between the houses on the square.
We made our way to the truly magnificent triangular Grand Place. Lined with gabled houses, at one end of the square is a statue of Marie-Christine de Lalaing, wife of Pierre de Melun, the 16th century governor of Tournai. Her husband was fighting elsewhere, so it was left to her to defend Tournai against the Spanish in 1581.
For modern-day visitors, the Grand Place is the ideal spot to settle into a café, preferably with a local Brunehaut or Dupont beer, and enjoy the city’s fascinating charms.
