Typical landscape of the Scheldt river banks in Tournai town : dark clouds above iconic Bridge of Holes medieval bridge
(Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium)
The “Pont des Trous” one of the most prestigious vestiges of medieval military architecture in Belgium. Built in the late 13th century, the bridge was part of the second surrounding wall of Tournai, which featured a total of 18 gates, and protected the course of the river Scheldt through the city.
The name of the bridge – Pont des Trous or Bridge of Holes – refers specifically to the three arches.
The third symbol of Tournai is definitely the Pont des Trous bridge. Built in the late 13th Century, it was completely destroyed during the Second World War. Rebuilt after it today is a wonderful reminder on some past times and the significance of the river traffic in Tournai.
