Walking in the center of Tournai along the facelifted quays : closeup view of buildings, roofs and tower of St-Nicolas church from Pont à Pont bridge
(Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium)
The quays of the Scheldt have been redeveloped and are now a pleasant place to go walking and cycling. Right along the river, you can admire listed facades, remarkable trees, the bridges there and also, of course, the river itself…
A place of great cultural significance, Tournai developed along the banks of the River Escaut (also known as the Scheldt) which today is still used as a route for cargo transport.
The main works concern the widening of the Scheldt and the construction of a new quay wall on +/- 200 m in front of the “pont à Ponts”, the replacement of the “pont à Ponts” by a new steel structure and the widening of the central arch of the “pont des Trous”.
