Environment of Tournai city hall (Hôtel de Ville) : the Musée des Beaux-Arts, the Fine Arts museum designed by the Art Nouveau belgian master Victor Horta
(Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium)
The museum houses the modern art collection of the Brussels patron of the arts Henri Van Cutsem, as well as the only two works by Manet exhibited in Belgium.
The great master of Art Nouveau deliberately built the edifice in the shape of a turtle. Indeed, in the wake of the theft of the Mona Lisa, Horta designed his museum to tackle security problems in museums. A guard is able to keep a panoramic watch on the rooms: standing in the centre of the museum, he can observe all the rooms surrounding him.
The Museum of Fine Arts has a considerable collection of painting and sculpture, beginning with Medieval Flemish primitives and paying special attention to Impressionism. Monet, Vincent van Gogh, Manet and Seurat are all represented, but there are also earlier pieces by masters like Pieter Brueghel the Younger, Peter Paul Rubens and Jacob Jordaens.
