Evening view after sunset in the city of Spa in the belgian Ardennes, houses with ornaments and balconies

Walking around it with my mum, a long-term Belgium resident whom I had brought along for a birthday treat, we saw architectural signs of its illustrious past as spa town to European royalty, interspersed with Belgium’s iconic art nouveau maisons de maîtres, the tall townhouses with balconies adorned with flamboyant wrought iron swoops.
The original Spa, though–with a capital S–is an entire town, handsome and diminutive, in the spring-soaked hills of the picturesque Ardennes Mountains in eastern Belgium. This Spa, from which our word derives, is an easy day trip from Brussels, modern enough to have instant cash machines but old-fashioned enough to preserve its heritage of ornate Beaux-Arts buildings. Spa offers even casual visitors a revitalizing taste of long ago in an atmosphere where distinctions between past and present flow sweetly together.

Located in the Ardennes region of eastern Belgium it’s naturally blessed with an abundance of mineral-rich thermal waters tourists flock here to relax and enjoy the health and wellness benefits of the water and the hot springs. It’s also very easy on the eye with beautiful buildings, thermal baths, a historic casino, an array of luxury hotels, and an endearing 19th-century retro charm.
