Enchanting site for nature, art, history and spiritual life : the modern Orval monastery and its medieval ruins, a top visited location in the heart of the Gaume region
(Browse the collection : Province of Luxembourg time lapse and video stock footage)
Our monastery is the fruit of a long history. One hundred and sixty-five million years ago, when the sea still covered our regions, the yellow ocre stone called “pierre de France” was already forming in the depths of these waters; later, it would be used in the construction of the monastery.
The Golden Valley (“Val d’Or” in French which was reversed to become “Orval”) has been a centre of Christianity, brewing and hospitality in the glorious countryside of the Belgian Ardennes since the eleventh century. Today, its monks brew one of the best-known Belgian Trappist beers and offer retreats for all seeking to recharge their batteries away from the hustle and bustle of our modern world.
The renown of the new abbey but also of its ancient ruins has grown steadily. Orval draws tens of thousands of visitors each year. As soon as you enter the abbey, you are struck by the beauty of the view on the guest quarters while, further up on the gable of the basilica, the statue of Our Lady of Orval with the Christ Child catches the visitor’s eyes. This 17-metre high statue weighs 22 metric tons.
