Private property made of local limestone sandstone typical of the Gaume region, the South Belgium countryside: timelapse with rolling clouds near the Orval abbey
(Browse the collection : Province of Luxembourg time lapse and video stock footage)
The château d’Orval was built on the old foundations of a former castle near the largest monastery in the country, the abbey of Orval. The castle was originally the abbot’s house. After the French Revolution it came into the hands of different families.
Typical Gaume landscapes are due to nature as well as to agriculture. Our forests are spread over three cuestas (gentle slopes opposed to steep slopes). The hills are made of erosion-resistant rocks while the valleys are made up of alluvial deposits. As a result, it’s normal to find woods on top of the hills and agriculture in the valleys.
The Gaume Region is a beautiful and relatively unexplored part of the country, located in the south of Wallonia, wedged in between France and Luxembourg. In contrast to the more rugged Ardennes, Gaume – or Belgian Lorraine for the well-read – is a hilly country full of gentle slopes. It’s Belgium’s sunniest region, which is reflected in its fertile meadows, forests and vineyards.
