Typical Gaume landscapes are due to nature as well as to agriculture. Our forests are spread over three cuestas (gentle slopes opposed to steep slopes). The hills are made of erosion-resistant rocks while the valleys are made up of alluvial deposits. As a result, it’s normal to find woods on top of the hills and agriculture in the valleys.
The Gaume Region is a beautiful and relatively unexplored part of the country, located in the south of Wallonia, wedged in between France and Luxembourg. In contrast to the more rugged Ardennes, Gaume – or Belgian Lorraine for the well-read – is a hilly country full of gentle slopes. It’s Belgium’s sunniest region, which is reflected in its fertile meadows, forests and vineyards.
(Trot Op)
Gaume is the romanesque part of Belgian Lorraine. It is not an administrative region of Belgium but a historico-geographic region forming a strong cultural identity. It is a French-speaking region, with a romance regional language, “the gaumais”, which is part of the romance dialects of Lorraine, one of the languages identified by the linguistic Atlas of Wallonia. (…) The microclimate of Gaume is known to be much sweeter than the rest of the Ardennes which overlooks it to the north and the little cicada of the mountains and the praying mantis still haunt the slopes of Torgny, the most southern village in Belgium.
