Reeds, water and golden leaves: typical nature landscape of the Lommel Sahara lake banks in the autumn light
(Browse the collection : Limburg province video shots and time lapse stock footage
The large sandy plain of the Lommel Sahara resembles a desert in miniature. But the region also has clear blue lakes, areas of heather and fragrant pine and deciduous forests.
A clear blue lake adds to the wonder, although the stunning effect of the Lommel ‘Sahara’ didn’t come about naturally. The strange landscape actually owes its existence to the pollution of a former zinc plant that dried up the grounds. To prevent the expansion of the sandy plains, pine forests were planted here a long time ago.
Bosland in Limburg is a unique place to visit and to explore nature in Belgium. The extensive park spreads out over 4 villages and it is the home of a broad natural diversity. Part of this park is an actual Sahara or desert, while other parts comprise peaceful forests and tranquil lakes.
