The German-Speaking Community of Belgium has political autonomy, within the framework of the community remit. Its remits include personal matters (treatment in healthcare institutions and, outside these, health prevention and assistance for certain categories of individuals: disabled people, immigrants, youth protection), cultural matters (the protection and promotion of the language, fine arts, cultural heritage, the media, libraries, tourism, youth politics and ongoing training, sports and leisure) and education.

The capital of the German-speaking municipality of Belgium awaits you with historical monuments, beautiful countryside, many events, attractive shopping facilities and first-class restaurants and cafés.
After the First World War, Eupen came to Belgium in 1919 to be annexed to Germany again at the start of the Second World War. In September 1944 the area was liberated by the US army and Eupen became Belgian again. The German-speaking Community was established in 1970, increasing the autonomy of the area.
