Urban landscape metamorfose in Kortrijk : Buda Beach recreational area and river Leie (Lys) banks facelift with new footbridge

This suspension bridge follows an S-shape in plan view. This geometry solves the issue of accessibility to the bridge from both banks. The maximum slope of the deck is limited to 5 %. The bridge’s length is 203 m with a central span of 86 m. The deck’s width is 3.2 m and consists of a steel hollow section 1 m high. The spatial shape of the cable follows the catenary of forces determined by software developed in-house.
Buda Beach is designed as a landscaped leisure area, in keeping with the interventions in Koning Albertpark, that will provide a springboard for the footbridge linking the two sides of the river and transform into a riverside beach in the summer with the construction of a temporary sandbank.
But the historic waterfront has changed dramatically in recent years. Once nothing more than a large car park, it is now lined with landscaped quays and even an urban beach where locals sit out on sunny days with bright umbrellas and beers. The city has added to the visual impact by building a series of seven new bridges over the river. The most striking is the shiny steel College bridge designed by architects Sum Projects to carry cyclists and walkers over the river in a series of sensual curves.
