Kortrijk’s town hall was built in Gothic-Renaissance transition style in 1520. The niches in the façade contain statues of the main Counts of Flanders. Inside the town hall you have the beautiful aldermen’s hall and council chamber featuring impressive stained-glass windows and wall paintings
The belfry (Belfort) stands in the centre of the Grote Markt and was part of the former cloth hall. The earliest mention of the cloth hall dates back to 1248. The belfry is an imposing square tower, slightly sunk into the market square. This is due to the market being raised throughout the centuries.
Remodelled in 1999 by Italian architect Bernardo Secchi, the Grote Markt is a very pleasing mix of the modern with the old, especially as you cast your eye past the belfry to St Martin’s Church. A wonderful place to dine or simply have a coffee, the square explodes with life in summer, and has a pleasant market each Monday.
