The town of Comines-Warneton (Komen-Waasten in Dutch) is located at the western edge of the Province of Hainaut (Henegouwen in Dutch), at the border with France and West Flanders (West Vlaanderen in Dutch). It includes a few cities or villages and hamlets depending of one single administration. Comines and Warneton are the main towns of this merged municipality.
A german field gun is on display at Warneton main square with Saints Pierre and Paul church in the background. It reminds the heavy fighting during World War One in the region. The village was located at the south of the Ypres Salient battlefield . Precisely: on the front line between the german positions and the allied forces. This is why the city was almost completely destroyed. The New Zealand expeditionnary corps engaged a decisive attack in spring 1917, like the Australians did in the nearby village of Messines (Mesen in Dutch).
Undoubtedly, history lovers will appreciate walking in the countryside and villages where many remains of the First world war in the area can still be seen.(More info : Wallonia Belgium Tourism)
