The town of Comines-Warneton (Komen-Waasten in Dutch) is located at the western edge of the Province of Hainaut (Henegouwen in Dutch), at the border with France and West Flanders (West Vlaanderen in Dutch). It includes a few cities or villages and hamlets depending of one single administration. Comines and Warneton are the main towns of this merged municipality.
Warneton is known for its beautiful church and many call it ” the cathedral of the Lys ” because of its dimensions. From its dominating position, we can admire the plains of the Lys (Leie in Dutch) river. Unfortunatly, this marvellous local heritage has suffered many destructions in the past, most of the time in a context of war. Clearly, the architecture is a mix of roman and byzantine styles, with a noticable Art Nouveau inspiration. The interior is rich of exceptionnal artwork such as stained glass windows, oak stalls, baptistery and many other religious furniture.
In summer, the nearby “Malle Poste”, an old brewery converted to cafe and museum, attracts visitors from the surrounding villages and from France. The territory of which begins stretches over the opposite bank of the Lys, the natural border.
History lovers also appreciate walking in the countryside as well as exploring the remains of first world war battlefields in the area.(More info : Wallonia Belgium Tourism)
