Mouscron is a walloon city and municipality located in the Belgian province of Hainaut, along the french border. The municipality also includes the villages of Dottignies, Luingne, and Herseaux. The city of Mouscron and its surrounding villages substantially grew during the 19th and early 20th century with the development of the textile industry in the north of France. The symbol of the city is the ” Hurlu “: a character representing protestant activists, who plundered the countryside during the 6th century ‘ Wars of Religion. The Hurlus Festival happens every first weekend of October. Celebrations are in full swing to the beat of drums and trumpets until sunday evening when Hurlus dolls are tossed from a raised platform on the main square.
The city’s main square, a stage for the Spring Fair in march, has been reworked into a modern esplanade, while the 15th century Château des Comtes holds a museum for the famous locally-born illustrator Marcel Marlier. Mouscron’s location on a frontier has given it a new commercial park and Famiflora, a kind of garden centre on steroids. The French cities of Lille, Tourcoing and Roubaix are at your fingertips, for first class cultural attractions.(Read more : The Crazy Tourist)
