The town of Warneton (Waasten in Dutch) is known for its graceful church and for its folk festival each year in early december. With its southern position to the city Ypres (Ieper in Dutch), Warneton is also ideally situated for visiting the Great War sites. Of course history lovers will not miss the iconic Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing, as well as countless war military cemeteries. These remaining traces of battlefields, trenches or mine sites make us think about the disastrous consequences of World War One for the rural landscape. Numerous farms, fields, tree rows and meadows had not survived.
Nowadays the landscape is dedicated to livestock and arable farming. The main crops that we can find are wheat, barley, potatoes, maize and sugar beet. Typically, hop and flax grow in this very westerly part of Belgium.
In spring this lovely and peacefully countryside offers solid opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking or cycling trails. For advanced levels, some more efforts should lead to the nearby Heuvelland, the land of hills and villages of West Flanders: Kemmelberg, Rode Berg, Zwarte Berg.(Read more : Wallonia Belgium Tourism)
