Reeds in the sunset light with Ooidonk castle towers in the background : splendour of the nature surrounding the rebuilt medieval fortress
(Browse the collection : Province of East Flanders time lapse and video stock footage)
A fortress was first built on the site of the current castle, intended to defend the city of Ghent and to fortify the river Leie. This fortress was owned by Jean de Fosseux, lord of Nevele. In 1944, the castle was classified as a protected landmark. In 1980, other constructions around it were also classified, and in 1995, so was the rest of the estate.
We arrived and were greeted by Agnes who is a sort of all in one person. She cleans, she cooks, she takes care of guests, she takes care of the owner and his family when he’s on site. She and her husband care for the grounds. We learned that Henry, the current owner, took over the property after his father’s death about 8 years ago. In the last year he turned part of the castle into an Airbnb rental, which is how we found it.
The backdrop of the imposing fortress, with outbuildings and access to the huge moat gate overlooking the beautifully maintained landscaped park gardens, make this a fantastic unique location.
