People walking alongside the Dijver water canal : antiques and flea market by sunny day in summer, top attraction in Bruges historic town
(Browse the collection : Bruges cityscape time lapse and video stock footage)
In fact, travelers who wish to go shopping in Bruges for something other than chocolates, should be aware that besides playing host to the Brugge Zandfeesten – a flea market extravaganza held three times a year – the capital of West Flanders is also home to one of the most popular and picturesque antique market: the Dijver flea market.
The Dijver market is a ‘folkloric market’, meaning that vendors may only sell secondhand stuff of over five decades old, except for those items made by hand by recognised artisans or artists. It’s a lovely place to hunt for vintage children’s toys or forgotten books or to simply bask in the quaintness of it all.
Bruges is very popular with day trippers, which makes it too busy in the summer months. It also gets crowded on the weekends in spring and autumn. Visiting during the week is better, it is best to visit the outside highlights early in the day.
