Bruges wonderful scenery with warm colors, canal and birds : the Wijngaarde park in autumn and the 3-arched bridge leading to the Begijnhof (Beguinage)
(Browse the collection : Bruges cityscape time lapse and video stock footage)
Close to the Minnewaterpark, on the fringe of the bustling historic centre of Bruges, with its medieval buildings and atmospheric cobbled streets, the Beguinage is a tranquil haven. Cross the three-arched Wijngaard Bridge, spanning one of Bruges’ many canals, and step through the gatehouse of 1776, designed by master mason Hendrik Bultynk, with a statue of St Elizabeth of Hungary in a niche above, and you enter another world.
The complex includes a gothic béguinage church and about thirty white painted houses dating from the late 16th, 17th and 18th century. Practically all of these are built around a central yard. The main entrance with gate can be reached via the three-arched stone bridge, the Wijngaard Bridge. In a bay the image of the holy Elizabeth of Hungary can be seen, who was the patron of many béguinages.
Bruges boasts six UNESCO heritage recognitions – a lot for a city of its size – helping Belgium reach fifth place in ranking of World Heritage Sites per square kilometre (15). Bruges’beguinage was the first to be recognised as World Heritage amongst Flemish beguinages in 1998; followed by the Belfry (Belfort) under Belfries of Belgium and France one year later; and then its entire historical city centre in 2000.
