Wijngaard begijnhof, beguinage of Bruges is like a village inside the city : a peaceful and authentic place with the white painted houses in a wooded park
(Browse the collection : Bruges cityscape time lapse and video stock footage)
The ‘Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde’ with its white-coloured house fronts and tranquil convent garden was founded in 1245. This little piece of world heritage was once the home of the beguines, emancipated lay-women who nevertheless led a pious and celibate life.
In Bruges there sits a quaint, walled neighbourhood with a surprising history that has followed its inhabitants to the current day: The Beguinage, recognised as a World Heritage site in 1998.
With its white buildings and stepped, red-tiled roofs, its grassy courtyard planted with drifts of white daffodils and narcissus, Bruges’ Beguinage of the Vineyard is certainly the most famous and often-visited beguinage.
