The College of Europe was established inBruges in 1949 in the aftermath of the Second World War following a declaration at the Hague conference where delegates called for the establishment of a European university. The idea being to bring young students together from different countries to discuss how the continent could resolve its national differences through international collaboration.
The centre of Bruges was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 2000. A guided tour through the unique historic centre is an absolute must. Among the winding alleys and romantic canals, you will imagine yourself to be back in the Middle Ages. From the marketplace to the belfry to the Béguinage and the Minnewater… Bruges is a place you simply have to see.
Bruges, or Brugge in Dutch, is almost a perfect medieval fairytale town in Belgium. The cobbled lanes and canals linking the market squares are so picture perfect that you may find it difficult to put your camera away and absorb the beauty for yourself. The city is also an architecture lover’s dream, even by European standards and the Gothic and Baroque buildings are truly jaw-dropping.
