Orval abbey near Florenville in the Gaume region, the southernmost part of Belgium : a key place to visit for nature, history and local products
(Browse the collection : Province of Luxembourg time lapse and video stock footage)
Our monastery is the fruit of a long history. One hundred and sixty-five million years ago, when the sea still covered our regions, the yellow ocre stone called “pierre de France” was already forming in the depths of these waters; later, it would be used in the construction of the monastery.
Orval is known for its Trappist beer, brewed on-site and very much praised by beer lovers. The water for Orval beer is drawn from the Abbey’s own well. It is high in calcium carbonate which contributes to its intense flavour. Visitors can see the installations twice a year when the brewery opens its doors to the public. There’s more! Orval cheese is made from whole-fat pasteurized milk from the Gaume region and is similar to Port Salut. A real treat…

The Golden Valley (“Val d’Or” in French which was reversed to become “Orval”) has been a centre of Christianity, brewing and hospitality in the glorious countryside of the Belgian Ardennes since the eleventh century. Today, its monks brew one of the best-known Belgian Trappist beers and offer retreats for all seeking to recharge their batteries away from the hustle and bustle of our modern world.
