Green meadows and trees, fluffy clouds, reeds blown by the wind : the beauty of spring nature in the region of the belgian coastal plains
(Browse the collection : West Flanders Province time lapse and video stock footage)
The flat coastal area, known locally as ‘Bachten de Kupe’ is woven through with a network of tiny drainage canals, for this is reclaimed land, or polder. The water level is just below the surface, and is regulated by the canals, and a widespread system of sluices and pumps.
Coastal zone agriculture forms a green space with various recreational assets, it is important in terms of water regulation and it offers a unique landscape with a typical biodiversity.
The coastal polders of Flanders are a man made habitat. About 1000 years ago men started with the embankment of tidal marshes and converted them into agricultural land. For many centuries the polders consisted mainly of very wet grassland as draining these land became more and more difficult especially as the sea-level was rising. These wet grasslands were ecologically very interesting, harboring an enormous biodiversity.
