Stunning gothic architecture of Mons City Hall building on the Grand-Place, magical atmosphere of Christmas lights and ornaments

Browse the collection : Mons capital of Hainaut Province

Each year, from mid-December until early January, the town of Mons puts on its winter clothes. There is magic on every street corner, illuminations decorate the facade of the Hôtel de Ville and the shopping areas, there is a festive atmosphere. A nice way to salute the year that is almost finished and to let in the Christmas spirit.

The buildings around the square date from the 15th century to today with the most impressive one being the Hotel de Ville (Town Hall). The Town Hall was built between 1458 and 1477 in gothic style, its tower bell was added later on, in 1717-1718. The wooden door of the Town Hall has a very beautiful lock in the form of the castle.

“During my recent search for places related to life and work of Vincent van Gogh in Belgium, I ended up in one of the most unique Belgian towns I’ve ever visited – in Mons. Located in the French-speaking region of Wallonia, it’s a charming little town perfect for a lovely weekend in Belgium.
