The Bridge of Holes or Pont des Trous (in French) : emblematic construction of the 13th century across the Scheldt (Escaut in French) river
Browse the collection : Tournai the oldest city of Belgium
The “Pont des Trous” one of the most prestigious vestiges of medieval military architecture in Belgium. Built in the late 13th century, the bridge was part of the second surrounding wall of Tournai, which featured a total of 18 gates, and protected the course of the river Scheldt through the city.
But nowadays, the bridge is being deconstructed to be completely rebuilt in this medieval style and to allow more river traffic by enlarging the central arch.
