AZ Groeninge is a large teaching hospital, affiliated with the Flemish KU Leuven Hospital network, in the Belgian city Kortrijk. The hospital is the result of a merger of four hospitals in Kortrijk and is in number of beds -in its current form- the fifth largest hospital system in Belgium. The in 2017 opened new 1000+ hospital bed facility at the Kennedylaan is one of the largest hospital sites in Belgium.
With its clearly defined, generous spaces, plenty of natural light, high-quality materials and clear sightlines between interior and exterior, the structure’s architectural quality engenders a feeling of everyday normality and wellbeing. Even the uniform design of the facade, intimating both load and support, can be read as a metaphor for a building in which the burden of illness is lightened by the care it provides.
The result is a stunning piece of innovative engineering and creative modern architecture. The high-end finishing lifts the hospital to a higher level.
The structure of the complex is determined by the individual modules, which function as independent units. This divides the building into clearly recognizable parts and simplifies the internal organisation.
